About the Restored Rite
The order in which children receive the sacraments is about to change in the Archdiocese of Denver. The standard age of Confirmation will be lowered to 3rd grade by 2020. This practice restores the three Sacraments of Christian Initiation to the order in which they existed in the ancient church and which is still practiced Eastern churches: first Baptism, then Confirmation, then the Eucharist. We want to give our community plenty of time to adjust to these changes, so we are making some gradual transitions. Here is the timetable for our children in the coming years:
Children in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades during the 2015-16 schoolyear (who have already received the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation and Eucharist) will be confirmed in middle school. For the next several years at St. Elizabeth’s, Confirmation will be open to 6th-8th graders and we will keep it at the middle school level so that our catechists don’t have to keep changing the curriculum every year. This will also enable us to confirm middle school age children who move into our parish from outside our archdiocese.
Baptized children in 2nd grade during the 2015-16 schoolyear will prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist in 2015-16. They are on track to receive Confirmation as 6th graders as well. Current 2nd graders will be the last class to “do it like we’ve always done it at St. E’s” ie, preparing for Reconciliation/Communion at age 7/8 with Confirmation to follow in 2020.
Baptized children in 1st grade during the 2015-16 schoolyear will be the first class to participate in the “Restored Rite.” They will prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in 2nd grade (2016-17), and for Confirmation and Eucharist in 3rd grade (2017-18).
Baptized children in Kindergarten and younger as of 2015-16 schoolyear will prepare for Reconciliation when they reach 2nd grade and will prepare for Confirmation/Eucharist in 3rd grade.
Life doesn’t always fit into tidy categories, right? If your child “doesn’t quite fit” into the timetable above – perhaps she’s a 7th grader who never received First Communion, a High Schooler who hasn’t been Confirmed yet, or a 4th grader who is not yet baptized – please come talk to us! God is always calling us to deepen our faith through the Sacraments, and we are here to facilitate that journey!
